8-year-old girl asks for divorce in court
Nojoud Muhammed Nasser arrived at court looking for justice against her father who forced her to marry a man 22 years her senior. The child also asked for a divorce, accusing her husband of sexual and domestic abuse.

According to Yemeni law, Nojoud cannot prosecute, as she is underage. However a court judge heard her and ordered the arrests of both her father and husband. picked by 2manyusernames 6 months ago

When I saw nothing but the headline "8 year old asks for divorce" on several sites, I thought it was another of those times when some kid was asking for a "divorce" from his parents and didn't think anything of it.

Saw it on another site that had more detail given upfront and realized it was far different than I thought.

Of course the real story here is that Yemen is allowing her case to go to trial, to have the accused arrested. This shows great progress.

I almost put this in the g.r.i.n. section because of that fact, but thought the subject matter might be a bit much for that category.

Good for that judge. In a culture like that, it was took a lot of courage to hear her and order the arrests of two men on the word of a female. Way to go!

Indeed! A very brave little girl, and a brave judge. I hope she has a good life from now on. And I hope her father gets the help he needs.... The 'husband' I dunno... He has his excuses, but broke the law! Also, whoever they went to who 'married' these two should also be held accountable.

I hope she can feel our good wishes for her life.
