I saw a baby wearing one of these a couple days ago.
My first thought was "I really hope that kid has a special medical condition that makes him need that, because if he doesn't, the world just got way too overprotective."
We joke constantly about making our son wear a "crash" helmet. He also needs knee pads--as he runs, jumps, and lands smack on his knees whether he is on the carpet or hard tiled floor. But would I ever actually make him wear a helmet? Should he choose to play a sport that requires one--most do--than yes. Otherwise, suck it up kid we all did!

I can identify with ya here. Our 6 year-old lad is a DISASTER area! He literally falls over, bumps his head and has bruises all the time. Part of this is a lack of fear that leads him to do stoopid things and part is just stoopidity :).
We always joke that he could do with wearing a helmet.
His list of injuries and mishaps include:
Falling the whole length of the stairs and knocking himself out.
Falling off the top bunk he was playing on (after repeatedly being told not to) and knocking himself out.
Breaking his little finger, TWICE, in as many weeks.
Swallowing a ball-bearing (fair sized too) We've still got the x-ray of it in his belly. He pooped it out.
The list goes on but those are some of his most memorable moments.

I'm going to buy two of these. One for Isis, and one for the new bean......so when the young bean gets big enough, I can put these on them, and let them just headbutt each other.
Sounds like a decent idea to me, I understand people's criticisms about it being overprotective, but babies are pretty easily damaged, just don't make your kid where it for too long. Five year olds with these helmet hats would be easy targets for the typically malicious and evil children, who go to public school.
They are *kind* of cute - but the trouble I have is;
if you don't have them wear it ALL the time (and I'm assuming you wouldn't) then parent and child may get 'used to' possibly more wreckless behavior.
*thud* "oh, he's fine" *crash* "Whoopsie!" and then you forget the hat when you're over at muffy's for the play date and *Big thud* ...awe crap, he's broken.

Kids are amazingly resilient though. It is horrifying when the fall and hurt themselves, but they get along fine.
I think it would be funny, but mean, but funny to make one of those out of velcro and put the kid in a room full of soft fuzzy things with soft fuzzy walls.
I could never imagine making a kid wear one of those, though. I just think it would lead to a false sense of invincibility and a much more likely chance of developing wussyitis later in life.
