"Piss Christ" Vandalized After Christian Protest Against "Blasphemy"
"Piss Christ" Vandalized After Christian Protest Against "Blasphemy"
When New York artist Andres Serrano plunged a plastic crucifix into a glass of his own urine and photographed it in 1987 under the title Piss Christ, he said he was making a statement on the misuse of religion. Controversy has followed the work ever since, but reached an unprecedented peak on Palm Sunday when it was attacked with hammers and destroyed after an "anti-blasphemy" campaign by French Catholic fundamentalists in the southern city of Avignon. picked by B-MoreRavensFan 6 months ago

"The gallery director, Eric Mézil, said it would reopen with the destroyed works on show 'so people can see what barbarians can do'. He said there had been a kind of 'inquisition' against the art work."

I agree with Mr. Mézil, people that would try to censor art through violence are aptly described as barbarians. The word "vandalism" comes from the latter days of the Roman empire when the Vandals, a barbarian tribe, sacked Rome and destroyed much of the city's treasured works of art.

Bit of a side track, but you might find it interesting.

The word barbarian is Greek in origin and is a pejorative onomatopoeia. The Greeks characterised all non-Greek languages as being simple, unintelligible noises and that they impersonated as "bar bar", hence Barbarian; one who makes bar bar noises.

Not unlike the "dirka dirka" speech in Team America.

I think that with the slash(es) it has become more of an artistic commentary than it was before.

I don't consider this any kind of art. He pees in a cup and drops a 99c plastic cross in it.

Art?? Really?? NO

Unless of course the vandalism is itself "art". Then that validates the actions taken or rather it makes them no worse and no better than the self-described artist whose so-called artwork was damaged.

By denying that this is art you impose a restriction (as yet undefined) on what is and isn't art. You have criteria (that we are not privy to).

The debate about what is and isn't art has gone on for centuries and I doubt very much that it will be resolved in this thread, but I'd ask you to consider this stance.

Wittgenstein has it that to define art would be to stifle creativity such that no art could exist.

Imagine for a moment if Etsy imposed limitations on what could and couldn't be sold by its members based on a definition of what is and isn't art. By taking this into consideration in regard to your own creations sold there you would find that a part of your own expression would be replaced by a need to conform to their rules and so wouldn't be a true reflection of your intent and therefore no longer your art.

Great art comes from following your heart.

Successful art comes from following current trends.

Great artists are lucky enough to be creating when both the above are true.

Well i think it was downvoted anyway.... sorry, wasnt me. ( i gave you a little boost)

Curious though, do you really believe your statement, or was it just a statement?

I am curious to know your real feeling behind it.

Life is art. Everything could potentially be viewed as art.

Humans are art. We are art.

I imagine it is art since as tony pointed out everything can be art - in fact everything has been declared art at one time or another.

Is it good art? Who knows. It is debatable. Did it take talent to make it? No, it didn't but then a ton of art especially photography didn't take talent to create but it did take creativity.

I will say this and it is in no way debatable in my mind. The US government had NO f**kING business giving the creator $15000 of our money.

Do I believe that statement? Well my faith says that anyone who does not believe in God will be judged...however I don't think all atheists are stupid (just as I don't think all Christians are geniuses). I just used it to make a point that sometimes we defend "art" because it ticks off people we don't like, but if it offends us we say "that's not art".
Anyways if you don't believe an artistic statement you have made it becomes less "art" and more "sellout".

I have some art for you sir:

Jesus preached against the Pharisees
"Righteous men" guilty of hypocrises
But if you look at modern Christianity
Closet-case preachers is all I can see

Judgmental people throwing stones
Claiming to serve the Prince of Peace
Justifying themselves, taking hostile tones
Are not Christians in the least
